Many Jews endured heroic sufferings during the persecution by Antiochus IV Epiphanes who committed "the abomination" of placing a statue of Jupiter in the Temple[4]. At Modin, the elder Mattathias killed a Jew who came to make a sacrifice at the royal altar as well as the Syrian military chief, and called all who loved the law to follow him with his five sons into the mountains. The Maccabean Revolt had begun.
These resisting Jews were called "the Hasidim" (men of the Covenant). The Pharisees were their heirs.
