The Notebooks of 1944
The Notebooks of 1944 present the content of autograph school notebooks 12 to 36[1] on which Maria Valtorta transcribed day by day the visions and dictations she received. All texts concerning The Gospel as It Was Revealed to Me are excluded from this content. It is indeed during this period that the visions of the life of Jesus truly begin.
Maria Valtorta had an inaugural vision on April 22, 1943 (see The Notebooks of 1943), in which she symbolically saw herself at the foot of the Cross. It was a mystical and prophetic vision, not part of the narrative of Jesus' life. This vision was followed by long daily teachings of Jesus. Only several months later, on January 5, 1944 (see summary below), did Maria Valtorta receive her first vision: that of the Blessed Passage of the Virgin Mary (the Dormition). It was a consoling vision for Maria Valtorta, then greatly tried, but she did not describe it. She only reports Jesus' commentary on it. The Dormition of Mary is truly depicted only on November 21, 1951 (cf. EMV 649), more than four years after the Work's conclusion (1947), as an important addendum. The vision of the Assumption of Mary soon followed on December 8, 1951, the day celebrating the Immaculate Conception (cf. EMV 650). Chronologically, it is the last vision of the Work. Jesus therefore evidently wanted to place this gift from Heaven under the sign and protection of His Mother. Furthermore, the first truly constitutive vision of The Gospel as It Was Revealed to Me was that of the Wedding at Cana, on January 16, 1944. An episode where Mary delivers this message that takes on full meaning in this context: "Do whatever he tells you (John 2:5)".
Jesus' teachings become deeper. Visions of the early centuries of the Church appear with the vision of the martyrs. The remembrance of these origins will be followed in The Notebooks from 1945 to 1950 by teachings on the Church of modern times.
In April/May 1944, Maria Valtorta endured a very painful trial: she had to leave Viareggio following bombings, and Jesus remained silent for many days. This is the "Naked Passion".

Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapters 5 and 6: the value of obedience, a virtue that redeems and produces Fruits of eternal life; the value of prayer that obtains the Father's mercy for the good of humanity. "God wants to Save you, and not to lose you."
April[edit | edit source]
- 7. Vision of the moment of Jesus' death on the cross and new evocation of Jesus' love to His Mother before the Last Supper.

- 9 April-10 May: Notes from the spiritual journal on the writer's "naked passion," who has been living for several days the terrible trial of God's abandonment. Her only Consolation: repeated Apparitions of the Virgin, Saint Joseph, and Saint Francis of Assisi (on May 1). Physical, moral, and spiritual sufferings. On April 15, she overcomes a strong temptation from the demon. The order to evacuate Viareggio (April 24), which involves abandoning her dear house and separation from Father Migliorini, intensifies the writer’s terrible suffering.
May[edit | edit source]
- 11. Commentary on the First Epistle of Saint Peter: the devil acts like a lion; he assaults the imprudent who venture into darkness, for he does not dare to do so when the Sun shines on Souls. If everything momentarily darkens, it is wise to remain within the limits of the theological and cardinal Virtues.
- 12. Continuation of the previous commentary: to attack, the lion waits for the imprudent animal to venture out of its den to satisfy hunger or thirst; Satan waits for man to give in to hunger of the flesh, money, or power. One must remember Jesus' Temptations and know how to imitate His answers.
- 13. Jesus corrects an omission of the writer in the dictation of February 20. Mary illustrates the meaning of the seven joys, which always come from love and tend towards more perfect love, as Love is the key of Marian theology.
- 15. The writer promises to do every day a special penance for the despairers, with whom she has shared the experience of feeling separated from God.
- 16. Jesus could have turned to ashes His accusers and torturers, but He did not because He was redeemer and not avenger, similarly, He did not kill the writer when the suffering of the trial tormented her; He could do so now that she is healed and has conquered Satan.
- 17. The writer expresses her happiness to have seen Jesus again as before.
- 18. On the day celebrating the Lord's Ascension, the writer has the intellectual vision of the Blood of the Redeemer spreading like an immense purple cloak over the earth. The Mass resumes the most important points of the Word’s life: the Incarnation in the consecration, the crucifixion in the elevation, the ascension in the consummation.
- 20. Mary illustrates the meaning of her seven sorrows which, besides her own pains, include all those of humanity transformed into thorns piercing her Heart. She exhorts the writer to offer her sufferings for her brothers.
- 21. The world hates and persecutes God's beloved and accuses them of heresy. But God loves them, blesses them, and opens eternity to them.
- 22. Genesis chapter 1 recalls that God alone does good. Therefore, if suffering produces Peace, it comes from God; if it creates torments but does not distance from God, He allows it; if it creates anxiety and distances from God, it comes from Evil.
- 23. God's infinite goodness is content with the "good will to obey" and does not impose extreme sacrifice, even if sometimes this good will is more painful than the sacrifice.
- 24. Humanity increasingly becomes the perverse race sung by Moses. May each become good after purifying oneself through love and suffering.
- 25. Vision of paradise, where Love reigns and only the "living" whom Isaiah speaks of can enter, that is, those who have erased their faults through charity. The writer sees the Father creating Souls; the Son judging the dead; the Holy Spirit, the Virgin, the Angels, and the Blessed.
- 26. Men must not refuse the treasure of Bread that removes all hunger and Wine that quenches all thirst: the Flesh and Blood of the Son of God, begotten in the virginal womb of Mary through the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 27. Baruch says that, to transmit wisdom, the Lord does not choose giants, for they are puffed up with Pride, but humble spirits full of charity and generosity, with upright souls.
- 28. Vision of the descent of the Holy Spirit on Mary and the Apostles gathered in prayer in the Cenacle.
- 29. Jesus gives the writer His weekly program of suffering: three days for priests; Wednesday for the despairers; Thursday for idolaters; Friday for souls in purgatory; Saturday for sinners.
- 30. Commentary on the book of Judith, chapter 9: for those pursuing a right goal, human weaknesses are useful, as was the case for Judith who used her virginity for a holy purpose.
- 31. Souls created by the Father have a graduation of various colors indicating how man, always anxious and dissatisfied, alters the order created by God and disturbs the harmony of human society.
June[edit | edit source]
- 2. Vision of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque to whom the Lord manifests Himself and reveals His Sacred Heart, entrusting her with the Mission to make it loved. Jesus uses a metaphor to explain how to remove bad ideas from a Soul to replace them with good ones. Vision of Gertrude and Veronica, the two saints who, along with Margaret Mary, spread love for the Sacred Heart.
- 3. To help the writer better practice the devotion of the Hour of Our Lady of Sorrows, Mary illustrates the heart-rending path that brought her back from the Sepulcher to the Cenacle after Jesus' burial. The vision accompanies the dictation. Another vision: Peter celebrates what was to be the Mass of the first times, in the Presence of Mary, the Apostles, and many Disciples and faithful.
- 7. Although she is very ill, the writer is happy to write about Mary, in Presence of Jesus.
- 11. The life of victims must be lived on a totally spiritual, very high level impregnated with love. Such Souls resemble the animals of Ezekiel’s theophany and heroically live the Virtues of the saints.
- 12. God's time is an eternal present condensed in the word "now". All victim souls must know this word to measure suffering According to God's time.
- 13. The Eucharist is the Heart of the Heart of Jesus, according to the explanation of the dictation and the vision presented that day to the writer: a radiant Heart, bearing the symbol of the Savior, seemingly containing a resplendent Host.
- 14. In paradise, even children possess intelligence and wisdom. Just as the eagle teaches its young to soar fearlessly toward the sun, Jesus elevates the writer and transports her in prayer. The Holy Hour of Jesus:
- I. "Unless I wash you, you cannot share in my Kingdom" (necessity of the Lord’s Purification who grants absolution).
- II. "One of you will betray me" (the Lord’s disposition to forgive in exchange for love).
- III. "Love one another as I have loved you" (that is, with humility, without selfishness, more than oneself).
- IV. "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you will ask me whatever you want and it will be done for you."
- 15. "The Soul is essence from God"; it is the "breath of life" that gave man a soul from mud and resurrected the dead. Jesus comments on His last prayer before the Passion, reported in the gospel of John.
- 16. Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The writer finds in Marta Diciotti’s prayer book the description of the apparition to Margaret Mary Alacoque, identical to her own vision on June 1.
- 20. Jesus invites the writer to contemplate the stars, whose luminous language attests to God's existence. Man, who cannot reach the stars no matter how close they seem, can instead reach God if he loves Him as He loves.
- 21. Jesus, weary of the continual offenses of sinners, finds rest and Consolation in His beloved. Comparison of conjugal love with the soul's love for God: in both cases, one reaches perfect communion in joy and pain.
- 22. The fear of having displeased God for not having reached perfection can distance from Him; but it is precisely this humility, this loving humiliation that pushes the divine Guest to remain in us.
- 23. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, whose spiritual childhood resembled the child Jesus (as shown in the illustration in the writer's book), is given as a model to all so that all may imitate her. Vision of Jesus’ death.
- 24. Consideration on the three times of Mary’s suffering, while the writer performs the Hour of Our Lady of Sorrows: the mother’s pain, the believer’s pain, God’s daughter’s pain. The writer's anguish caused by her distance from her home and confessor.
- 25. The soul that suffers without receiving direct help from God to relieve its suffering (as is the case with the writer) has more merit than the one receiving miraculous spiritual anesthesia. The writer’s reward will be complete if she fulfills all God’s will.
- 26. Beside her bed, the writer sees her guardian angel whose Mission is to bring her hope, since faith and charity are already strong in her. Every guardian angel adores God in his creature if the latter is in the Lord’s Grace or venerates the work of the Creator if it is no longer.
- 27. Souls of predilection receive, like Abraham, the order to leave their land and Family and go to the land Jesus shows them which at first will be hostile. But the more they proceed under the unique star (the Lord), the easier, brighter, and more spiritual their path becomes.
- 29. Jesus applies the motif of earthly life's transience to the parable of the minas (Luke 19:11-27): many misuse the coin of eternity entrusted to them and go to eternal suffering; few remain inert out of fear of justice and will know love in Purgatory; very rare are those who make this coin grow and plunge into love.
July[edit | edit source]
- 1. Testimony of Saint John on the nature of Christ, "true God and true Man," on the day the precious Blood is celebrated.
- 2. That the writer not anxiously seek the Lord when He does not make Himself heard, but know that she is then united with Him to serve their common Father.
- 3. "The Most High does not dwell in Temples made by human hands" (Ac 7:48), but in the soul of His faithful child.
- 4. The writer struggles Against the turmoil of her soul and Against the temptations of the demon.
- 5. Jesus recommends to the writer to be good and patient, for He will give her a great gift; He persuades her that she is no longer a "servant" of the Lord, but His "wife," and only the Spouse can understand and console her. Jesus invites the writer to be silent and forgive: the work of co-redeemers is to draw souls out of Darkness and plead with the Father to forgive them because "they do not know what they do."
- 6. Vision of Nennolina.
- 7. Those chosen for a particular Mission are cut off from the world, they are strangers to others, while remaining their "brothers," for it is in evangelical solitude that they work for their Good.
- 8. Vision of the glorious Assumption of Mary. "God divinely helps."
- 8-9. The previous vision continues, and the immense joy it gives the writer prevents her from concentrating to commemorate the Hour of Our Lady of Sorrows.
- 11. The writer relates that the previous day was a day of great joy thanks to Father Migliorini's visit, who confessed her and gave her Communion. Deep nostalgia for her house in Viareggio.
- 12. Mary's caresses gently comfort the writer’s anguish. Mary confirms that she appeared in the habit of the Queen of Carmel, as the writer's prayers are included in Carmelite intentions.
- 13. Psalm 34 (33) says the death of the sinner is horrible like his life, but the chosen souls must love him to try to Save him. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus comforts the writer with her words and caresses and makes her happy enough to forget her physical sufferings.
- 14. From the book of Genesis: every man carries God’s image, but not all have God’s resemblance, as sin deprives them of it. New appearance of little Thérèse and mention of the song accompanying the saint's communion and viaticum. The writer does not ask the Lord for the glory of visions but the grace to love Him more and more.
- 16. Lesson on the perfection of God's infinite goodness: Father, Brother, and Friend of man.
- 20. The apostolic Mission of the Church continues with the minor Apostles, that is, the saints and the "voices" condemned by the Pharisaic world but chosen by the Lord among the humble and those who love Truth.
- 21. Commentary on Psalm 119 (118): "When will you comfort me?" Jesus promises He will do so soon. "When will you judge my persecutors?" Jesus answers: "Blessed are you if you are persecuted!" Meanwhile, the writer must only love and be absolutely faithful to God, even to martyrdom if necessary. This is how she will obtain Life.
- 22. On the occasion of the feast of Mary Magdalene, a broad vision of the story of Cecilia and Valerian, including the description of the Mass of the early Christians and then pagan Weddings. Dictation of Jesus on faith and the purity of Cecilia.
- 23. Continuation of the previous vision: the Baptism of Valerian and his brother Tiburce. The martyrdom of Cecilia. As commentary on the previous visions, Jesus illustrates the strength of faith, purity, and holiness of marriage conceived as reciprocal elevation.
- 25. From the book of Exodus, chapter 30, "the altar of incense." The Heart of the victim must be an altar "precious inside and out, everywhere," incorruptible in temptations, very strong yet light. It is on this altar that Jesus, the supreme Priest, will burn the incense of the victim's immolation for the salvation of brothers.
- 26. The noblest sentiments - love, mercy, prayer, desire to possess gifts from God and holiness - can become impure if due to human interests or desire for material rewards: purity of Heart is necessary.
- 28. Commentary on the gospel of Saint John (9:31): doing God's will is so powerful that through it one obtains everything, not through many prayers.
- 29. Christians who voluntarily offer themselves to suffering to continue the work of redemption will receive from God sweetness, love, and mercy, even if, in the world's eyes, they seem victims of divine severity.
- 30. Jesus explains the reasons for the various aspects of His Face at different moments of His Passion. He dwells momentarily on the image of the holy shroud and the way it is imprinted on it.
- 31. From the gospel of Saint Matthew (8:22): "Let the dead bury their dead"; Jesus explains who the dead are and how their path to Life delays; He invites the writer and faithful Disciples to love in God the things and persons of the world dear to Him.
August[edit | edit source]
- 2. On the feast of Saint Mary of the Angels, vision of Mary in paradise. Commentary on the book of Ezekiel, chapter 44: only through Mary can one reach God; she is the closed Gate through which only God entered, and it reopens before the love of a child of God.
- 3. Where is God (1 Kings 19)? God is in the little things that make life and are always loved with conviction that evil never comes from God, but from a single Enemy with multiple faces. The writer takes refuge on Mary's breast, whose maternal and comforting Presence she describes.
- 4. As read in the book of Job (33), God tirelessly tries to Save man from sin with infinite patience. Man's weakness is strengthened by the communion of saints, which enables him to understand, repent, and Save himself, and through which indulgences are obtained.
- 6. Jesus, the Master, leads the writer on the path of charity and, as a true master wanting to make his student strong, is at first strict and uncompromising, then softens His conduct. Indeed, just as the weak bindweed clings to the rough and vigorous trunk of the cross, the Master makes the latter increasingly smooth to ease the ascent; likewise, she has come to know her Good and shared with Christ the desire to Save Souls.
- 7. Vision in two moments: one concerning the dialogue between Gamaliel, who disapproves of violence Against Christians, and Saul, who disagrees; the other concerning the accusation led by the Sanhedrin against Stephen, culminating in the stoning of the young man, in which Saul participates ferociously.
- 8. Jesus' earthly life is, before men, a continual manifestation (epiphany) of virtue practice, both daily (love and respect for parents, honesty at work, obedience to the Law, charity to Neighbor, etc.) and great manifestations (Nativity, Presentation at the Temple, Baptism in the Jordan, Transfiguration, etc.).
- 9. Jesus' words are like precious stones He places in the hands of His spokesperson so that, even if she does not understand their cultural value, she generously distributes them to those who desire them.
- 10. To be totally a daughter of God means possessing a love that surpasses all bad memories or uses them as momentum towards greater charity. Jesus personally guides the writer in the storm, like a good helmsman with his boat, and will never leave her alone. "Love to love."
- 11. The writer receives from Mary a lesson on "perfection of detachment," consisting of knowing how to detach from her human way of thinking, as well as the invitation to place all her resentments in Mary's hands so that she throws them in the fire of love. The vision of the agony at Gethsemane appears anew, accompanied by the trial before the Sanhedrin, Calvary, and death on the cross. The visions are always foreign to the writer’s will.
- 14. In a note reserved for Father Migliorini, the writer recalls having confided that she sees people in their intimacy; thus she sees her cousin as prey to Satan.
- 15. The vision of Mary’s Assumption appears to her with new details.
- 16. The writer relates having compared the two visions of the Passion (February 11 and August 16) and found them identical, which reassured her Against the Malignant’s insinuations.
- 19. Jesus answers the writer's sadness through the image of the beloved sheep of the shepherd (Ps 23). Jesus dictates to the writer an act of thanksgiving for all kinds of sufferings she has received from Him so that all pain is offered by infinite love.
- 20. Jesus answers with gospel words to difficult doctors who do not believe it possible that He reveals unknown episodes of His public life through the writer.
- 21. Continuing His answer to difficult doctors, Jesus notes the smallness of the writer who deserved to become the "little voice" only through the power of her total love.
- 23. Brief note on a sudden and intense carnation scent noticed by the writer.
- 25. It is Friday and the writer tries to put into practice the considerations on the fourth sorrow of the Virgin: patience in trials, need for silence, and nightmares due to fever. She knows why Jesus treats her so.
- 27. The Enemy vainly tries to use the visions received by the writer for human praise.
- 29. A letter from her confessor and another from a priest give the writer an occasion to recall the role of priests in this time of tension.
September[edit | edit source]
- 10. The role of victim souls: to bear Christ among men as living monstrances and act as lightning rods who, by their Presence, divert misfortunes.
- 12. The value of the Mission of victim souls who, to give time for conversion, offer their Neighbor true Life and pay for it with tears, sufferings, penances, and sacrifices.
- 13. The comfort given to Jesus by the angel during His agony at Gethsemane was the future illumination of the good that would flow from His death and from Hearts that would love Him, among whom was the writer.
- 14. The stages of the love of God: fear of God (which prevents sin); desire to know Him better (which stirs affection for Him); love, which gives wings to its vehemence, flies ever higher, without limits, because "the love of the saints is a vertigo of love."
- 15. Short dictation from a soft and light voice claiming to be the Love of God and explaining its nature: it is the eternal Force that will survive all creation.
- 16. Vision of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata.
- 18. Jesus gives absolutions and blessings of the Franciscan and Servite third orders to the writer who was unable to receive them from the priest.
- 19. Lucifer is not only evil but also eminently intelligent; he never tires of doing evil and snatching souls from God. What is decisive in the struggle between Good and Evil is man's choice who, endowed with will, intelligence, reason, and above all Grace, should be incorruptible.
- 21. Visit of Father Migliorini, and silence of Jesus.
- 22. The true treasure lies in the Heart, for God is there and to be sought there.
- 24. Every manifestation of the supernatural is a "sign of Contradiction" among men. Instruction on the manner to disclose the writings of the spokesperson: it should be done with dignity, prudence, moderation, without haste so as not to disturb the large discretion of the spokesperson. On Jesus' order, the writer copies passages from 1943 dictations that report instructions about disclosing the writings.
- 25. Writer's disturbance regarding provisions on the writings. She finds comfort in Judith’s prayer. From the book of Jonah: Jesus severely reiterates His orders given the previous day concerning disclosure of the writings.
- 27. Jesus answers some "whys" of the writer. Her mother feared Jesus because she knew Him too little, but her soul is now redeemed by her daughter’s love united with the Lord’s. Marta, from her trip to Viareggio, brings a geranium born in the writer’s house; moved, the latter recalls Saint Joseph’s gesture in a Marian vision.
- 28. Writing Jesus’ words and describing visions makes the writer happy, as it raises Souls toward the Light, as happened to her cousin Paola. She therefore desires to consume herself in this until her death.
- 30. While performing the Hour of Our Lady of Sorrows, the writer receives a vision of dead Jesus and the promise of a vision on Mary's spiritual anguish.
