The goodness of Jesus who heals ten lepers, whose flesh’s ravaged appearance and bad smell are repulsive - James Tissot, Brooklyn Museum.

Throughout the work of Maria Valtorta, Jesus regularly and insistently asks everyone to be good, especially those who have just been healed thanks to one of his many miracles.

In "The Gospel as It Was Revealed to Me"

  • The saints remember God, the words heard in the Creative Creation, and Goodness brings them back to life in their Hearts, to raise them like eagles.[1]
  • You speak with good sense and justice. But see, it is better to sin out of goodness of Soul and out of trust, than out of distrust and hardness.[2]
  • Just as one hates me for my austerity, one will hate me for my goodness, because both announce God.[3]
  • I am not good and I do not see what Goodness sees. I see the outside. The one who is good penetrates inside.[4]
  • Your goodness wiped away my childhood tears. Should my goodness not wipe away your tears?[5]
  • How many times one acts out of goodness, true goodness, but with all-human goodness! Yet, since this action is only human, one desires that this action be known by men.[6]
  • It is enough to tell the truth and be good to attract the hatred of the crowd after the first moment of enthusiasm.[7]
  • I have given a direction to their goodness, like you do with the pruning hook of the pruner. But goodness was within them. Now it blossoms, for there is someone to care for it.[8]
  • Evangelization of the pagans by the acts of charity: They have the joy of saying "We know that the True God is Goodness and that He loves us because of that."[9]
  • Have the spontaneity of the child who goes from instinct toward the one whose goodness he feels, without seeking anything other than goodness.[10]
  • Goodness of God.[11]
  • God is not only Legislator. He is Father. And a Father of immense goodness.[12]
  • Do you see that you still have goodness? You are not wicked... You only have a large open wound and no one heals it... Your goodness flows away like blood from a wound.[13]

In Fundamental Christian Texts

In the Bible

  • "And God saw that it was good ..." ([14])  Praise YHWH, all the earth, serve YHWH with gladness, come before him with joyful songs! Know that it is YHWH who is God, he made us and we are his, his people and the flock of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise; give thanks to him, bless his name! He is good, YHWH, his love is eternal, and from age to age, his truth. ([15])

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church

Goodness: what pushes one to do good

  • God, infinitely Perfect and Happy in Himself, out of pure goodness freely created man to share in His happy life.[16]
  • It pleased God in His wisdom and His goodness to reveal Himself personally[17]
  • In the condescension of His goodness, God, to reveal Himself to men, speaks to them in human words[18]
  • In all His works God shows His Goodwill, His goodness, His Grace, His love[19]  The glory of God is that this manifestation and communication of His goodness be realized for which the world was created[20]
  • For Almighty God (...), since He is sovereignly good, would never allow any evil to exist in His works[21]
  • Just as the unique goodness of God truly spreads in various forms in creatures, so the unique mediation of the Redeemer does not exclude but rather arouses varied cooperation by creatures, depending on the unique source[22]
  • Man participates in the wisdom and goodness of the Creator who confers mastery over his acts and the ability to govern himself for truth and Good[23]
  • By despair, man opposes the Goodness of God[24]
  • The hatred of God comes from Pride. It opposes the love of God by denying His goodness and pretending to curse Him as the one who forbids sins and inflicts penalties[25]
  • The Church urgently urges everyone to pray and act so that divine Goodness frees us from the ancient servitude of War[26]
  • Jesus teaches us this request "Give us", because it glorifies Our Father as it recognizes how Good He is beyond all goodness[27]

Goodness: what is healthy and pleasant

  • Created from divine goodness, creation participates in this goodness ("And God saw that it was good (...) very good"[28]
  • God is infinitely good and all His works are good. Nevertheless, no one escapes the experience of suffering[29]
  • Through Christ, the Church can offer the sacrifice of praise in Grace for all that God has done that is good, beautiful and just in creation and humanity[30]

Goodness: what is full of qualities and good dispositions

  • Each creature has its own goodness and perfection.[31]
  • The first man was not only created good, but was constituted in a friendship with his Creator[32]
  • The devil and other demons were certainly created by God naturally good, but it is they who made themselves evil[33]
  • Becoming mysteriously the Body and Blood of Christ, the signs of bread and wine continue to signify also the goodness of creation[34]
  • Desires are good in themselves; but often they do not maintain the measure of reason[35]

Good: what is conforming to moral norm

  • The Church considers all that may be found good and true in other Religions "as a preparation for the Gospel and as a gift"[36]
  • God having created man and Woman, their mutual love becomes an image of the absolute and unfailing love with which God loves man. It is good, very good, in the eyes of the Creator[37]
  • The Church attaches great importance to the Presence of Jesus at the Weddings of Cana. It sees there the Confirmation of the goodness of marriage[38]  Human acts are morally qualified. They are good or bad[39]
  • The Fruits of the Spirit: "charity, joy, Peace, patience, longsuffering, goodness, benignity, meekness, faithfulness, modesty, continence, chastity"[40]
