Jesus sent them on a Mission two by two - James Tissot - Brooklyn Museum.
"My Mission is to make men understand who the Lord is and by means of this understanding to make them love Him in the spirit of truth."[1]

Mission of Christ

Mission of the Apostles and the Disciples

  • Now I have decided to send you into the world. But before, I must instruct you to make you capable of facing the world with gentleness and sagacity, calm and constancy, with Conscience and the knowledge of your Mission.[7]
  • Jesus comments on sending the twelve Apostles on a Mission: Comments from [8]-[9]-[10] and [11]
  • Sending on a Mission to the poor: give ...[12]
  • Sending of the twelve Apostles on their 1st Mission ([13]-[14]-[15]): "Go to the lost sheep of the people of Israel. - Proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. - Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. - You have received freely, give freely - Do not acquire neither gold, nor silver - the worker deserves his food - When you enter a house, say: Peace be with you - Shake the dust from your feet - I send you out as sheep among Wolves - Men will drag you before the courts - When you are persecuted in a city, flee to another - No disciple is above his master - Everything Hidden will be revealed - Do not be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows! - Do not think that I have come to bring Peace on the earth - Whoever loves his father or his mother more than me is not worthy of me - Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever wants to save his life will lose it - Whoever homes you, homes me."[16]
  • Details of the instructions during this sending on a Mission: "There is one thing more than the miracle and which also convinces the crowds and with deeper and lasting effect: a holy life. But you are still far from it and you, Judas, farther than the others. (...)
Go then, healing the sick, cleansing lepers, raising the dead of the body and of the spirit, because the body and The Spirit can also be ill, leprous, dead. And also learn how to perform the miracle: by a life of penance, fervent prayer, a sincere desire to make manifest the power of God, deep humility, living charity, burning faith, an hope that is not disturbed by any sorts of difficulties. Truly I say to you all is possible to the one who has within him these elements.
Even the demons will flee at the Name of the Lord pronounced by you, if you have within you what I have said. This power is given to you by Me and by Our Father. It is not bought with money. Only our will grants it and only a righteous life maintains it. But since it is given to you freely, give it freely to others, to those in need. Woe to you if you belittle the gift of God by making it serve to fill your purse. It is not your power, it is the power of God. Use it, but do not make it your property by saying: 'It belongs to me.' As it is given to you, it can be taken from you. (...)
The only fruit of what you do, which you are permitted to take, are the Souls that, by the miracle, you will conquer for the Lord and which must be given to Him. This is your money, nothing else. In the other life you will rejoice in this treasure."[17]
  • Sending on a Mission of the seventy-two Disciples.[18]
  • You were not needed at this hour among your companions, whereas you were, and you see it, at Bethsaida. Each one has his Mission, and each Age its fatigues."[19]
  • Before leaving you, I repeat the words I told you before sending you two by two through the cities: 'Go, preach, announce that the Kingdom of God is very near. Heal the sick, cleanse lepers, raise the dead of The Spirit and of the flesh by imposing on them in my Name the resurrection of The Spirit, the seeking of Me who is Life, or the resurrection from death. And do not take pride in what you do. Avoid quarrels among yourselves and with those who do not love us. Demand nothing for what you do. Go rather among the lost sheep of the house of Israel than among the Gentiles and the Samaritans, and this not out of aversion but because you are not yet able to convert them. Give what you have without worrying about the morrow. Do all that you have seen me do, and in a spirit like mine. Here, I give you the power to do what I do, and that I want you to do so that God may be glorified.' He breathes on them, kisses them one by one and dismisses them.[20]
  • Evangelization of Samaria: Now I will divide you into two groups of five and you will go under the leadership of your group leader through the neighboring countryside, just as in the early days when I sent you. Recall all that I told you then and put it into practice. The only exception is that now you will go announcing the near day of the Lord, even to the Samaritans, so that they are prepared when He comes, and that their conversion to the One God will be easier for you. Be full of charity and prudence, free of prejudice.[21]
  • Talking about God and talking to God is preparing for the Mission.[22]

In the fundamental Christian texts

In the Bible

  • The Spirit of the Lord יהוה is upon me, because יהוה has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn"[23]

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church

Mission of Christ and The Spirit

  • The eternal origin of the Spirit is revealed in its temporal Mission.[24]
  • It is to destroy the works of the devil that the Son of God appeared.[25]
  • Jesus means in Hebrew: "God saves". At the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel gives Him the proper name Jesus which expresses both His identity and His Mission.[26]
  • The Mission of the Holy Spirit is always conjoint and ordered to that of the Son.[27]
  • God wanted His Son to be born of a virgin. These reasons also touch on God the person and the redeeming Mission of the Christ who made this Mission through Mary for all men.[28]
  • My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish His work.[29]
  • Raised to heaven and glorified, having thus fully accomplished His Mission, the Christ remains on earth in His Church.[30]
  • The conjoint Mission of the Son and The Spirit.[31]
  • The Mission of the Holy Spirit in every liturgical action is to put into communion with Christ to form His Body.[32]
  • Jesus prays before the decisive moments of His Mission.[33]

Mission of the Apostles

  • Christ sent the Apostles He had chosen.[34]
  • Jesus chose men numbering twelve to be with Him and to participate in His Mission; He shares with them His authority."[35]
  • "As the Father has sent me, so I send you."[36]
  • Fulfillment of the old Covenant: sending the Disciples for Baptism.[37]
